'Game Of Thrones' Season 8 Spoilers Won't Leak, Thanks To A "Drone Killer"
Game of Thrones is one of the leading shows to bring what is known as "spoiler culture" to the forefront. While the idea of keeping spoilers under wraps for the uninitiated predates it by decades, George R.R. Martin's story is one where the shocking moments rely on the reader not being able to see what's coming, due to unreliable narrators. For years the show tried to keep these shocking moments a secret, to little effect. But with Game Of Thrones Season 8 spoilers for the forthcoming series finale, it seems to have finally managed it, thanks to "Drone killers."
For a long time, Game of Thrones spoilers relied on fans to keep them quiet, as the reveals were on sale at Barnes & Noble for $9.99 a pop in paperback. But once Season 5 began, and the show began passing the novels, the series thought it could just keep filming private, and everything would be fine.
They were wrong. In Season 5, the first four episodes were put online 24 hours before the premiere. In Season 6, paparazzi managed to get pictures of significant scenes being filmed, spoilers were posted on YouTube ahead of time every week, and episodes leaked online randomly before airing. In Season 7, someone posted overviews of all seven scripts, plot point by plot point, just as filming began.
With security breaches like these, it's easy to understand why the production would go over the top for the final six episodes. According to Sophie Turner, they started employing tech that felt like it was out of the movies. During her appearance at New York Comic-Con for Dark Phoenix, she mentioned how it worked:
If a drone flies above sets, there’s a thing that can kill the drones, which is really cool. It creates a field around it and the drones just drop. It’s very X-Men.
According to Entertainment Weekly, they too saw signs around the sets during filming that suggested this tech was in use:
[W]e could see how the sprawling outdoor constructions on sets such as Winterfell castle were labeled with no-fly zone warnings — drones, helicopters and planes were not permitted over locations where GoT was filming. HBO worked together with local authorities to prevent any unauthorized photography.
But as the article notes, this was only one of Game of Thrones security measures. Other actors have reported scripts which loaded only when on set, effectively keeping scenes limited to a need-to-know basis, where you only needed to know if you were in the room. There were also scripts that erased themselves once shooting for the scene was completed.
So far, the over-the-top measures have had the desired effect. While there have been a few purported script pages leaked here and there, there has been nothing to confirm or deny their legitimacy, and what few paparazzi photos have come out tell viewers very little.
Fans will just have to wait until Game of Thrones Season 8 airs to find out what happens. The show returns to HBO for the final time in 2019.
Peter Dinklage's Quotes About 'Game Of Thrones' Season 8 Will Shake You To Your Core
Game of Thrones Season 8 will only be six episodes, the shortest season of the series. Most seasons have been a full 10 episodes, with last year's Season 7 coming in at seven installments. But even as the season length has shrunk, the battles have grown. Season 1 didn't have a battle sequence, because their budget couldn't afford it. Season 6 and 7 had two of the most complex combat sequences to date. But Peter Dinklage's quotes about the Game Of Thrones Season 8 forthcoming battles suggest fans ain't seen nothing yet.
The biggest jump in how the battles in Game of Thrones were staged came first in Season 5 when director Miguel Sapochnik took the helm to create the Massacre at Hardhome in Episode 8. The next year, HBO was so impressed, when showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss asked for a larger budget for Sapochnik to do Episode 9's "Battle of the Bastards," they actually gave it to them.
This sequence is now considered the gold standard for a ground battle staged in a TV fantasy series (or any TV series). The question on everyone's mind for the last season is if the show will be able to top themselves one more time.
Actor Peter Dinklage, who plays Tyrion Lannister, seems confident of it. At the premiere of his new film I Think We're Alone Now, he was asked the following by a reporter:
On Game of Thrones, one question, can the Battle of the Bastards possibly be topped?
Dinklage answered:
Oh my god, and then some. You are in for it. Truly.
Those who have been following filming believe Dinklage is referring to the massive battle Game of Thrones filmed for nearly two months solid. The shooting sequence went on for 55 consecutive nights, and took place in three locations, including Moneyglass (which usually stands in for Winterfell), Magheramorne Quarry (which is where the production usually sets up large-scale greenscreen sequences, like "Hardhome") and Saintfield (which is where "The Battle of the Bastards" was filmed, and often stands in for the lands around Winterfell).
No battle sequence has ever taken this long to film before. "The Battle of the Bastards" took the better part of 25 days. "Hardhome" took slightly longer at almost a month. Season 2’s “Blackwater” and Season 4’s “The Watchers on the Wall” took 3 weeks apiece.
With the series closing out the story for the final installment, it's natural they would like to go out with the biggest and most expensive battle ever produced for TV anywhere, one able to stand shoulder to shoulder with something filmed for the big screen. Dinklage seems to believe the work on this battle has been enough to do so.
As for the rest of us, we won't find out until at least 2019 when the show returns to HBO. the best guess for when is later in the spring, around May sometime, so this battle can air as close to Emmy voting as possible. Until then, all fans can do is wait.
The Tyrion Targaryen 'Game Of Thrones' Theory Was Officially Shut Down By Peter Dinklage
One of the saddest parts about Game of Thrones coming to an end is along with the reveal of the story's ending, all the fan theories that have been around for decades are over. For instance, "The Tyrion Targaryen Theory" has been around since 1998, when A Crown of Kings came out. It sprung from book readers interpreting a line spoken by Rhaegar in a vision Dany has in the House of the Undying, "The Dragon has three heads," to mean a third Targaryen. But now, the Tyrion Targaryen Game Of Thrones theory that sprung from it has been laid to rest.
The theory has been bouncing around Reddit ever since the show began, and book theories invaded the show-watcher landscape. As fans caught on three dragons would need three dragon riders, the question became which character would turn out to be Targaryens and ride them? One of them is Dany. The second is Jon Snow, the original "Sekrit Targ," son of Lyanna Stark not Ned, and the love child born of her and Rhaegar Targaryen.
This left one more character as a secret Targaryen. Many book readers took Tywin's hatred of Tyrion, his declaration he was "no son of mine," and some passing references to the Mad King being lustful towards Tywin's wife Joanna Lannister, and added 2 + 2 together. The resulting theory: Tyrion was actually a Targaryen.
Then, at the Emmy awards this past weekend, Peter Dinklage made a passing remark during his speech:
"My brother from another mother," he calls Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. Dinklage is not talking about the story. This is a loving reference to his relationship with a fellow actor, with whom he's played brothers for a decade. He's paying tribute to Coster-Waldau because he just beat the guy out for that statuette.
But fans, being what they are, jumped to conclusions. Did Dinklage just admit Tyrion and Jaime are half-brothers? Will the Tyrion Targaryen Theory be revealed in Season 8?
Dinklage wound up confronted with these questions on Jimmy Kimmel Live! following his win. So he clarified: The answer is no.
The reality is, the Tyrion Targaryen Theory never held water once the show started. A lot of it rested on details that never made it into the series, like Tyrion having mismatched eyes, one of which is Lannister green and the other of which is so dark purple as to be black. Tyrion's hair is also described as so blonde as to be silver.
The show did dye Dinklage's hair in Season 1, but by the next season they'd let it go as a bad decision. They never did the eyes, because Dinklage didn't want any grotesque character details as part of Tyrion's look. (He even refused a beard in the early seasons, as too stereotypical.) The bits about Tywin's wife were never introduced on screen. Rhaegar never appears in the House of the Undying, nor does he say "The Dragon has three heads."
These were red herrings, and the show cut them as such. Now, Dinklage confirms it. R.I.P. Tyrion Targaryen Theory, 1998-2018.

- We witness the resurrection of Jon Snow. Credit goes to Melisandre, who, with her black magic, is able to resurrect him.
- The people are introduced to Euron Greyjoy, the brother of Balon Grejoy. Euron manages to kill Balon and even crowns himself as the ruler of the Iron Islands.
- Our beloved Hodor gets killed. It is one of the most heartbreaking scenes in Game of Thrones history.
- Arya becomes total badass this time, and leaves the temple of Many-Faced God by declaring herself as Arya Stark of Winterfell, instead of being No-One.
- In Battle of the Bastards, we encounter one of the best cinematically appealing shots ever in television history. The battle featured between Jon Snow and Ramsay Bolton is fierce and jaw dropping; and Ramsay meets a satisfying end.
- Season finale was the best episode so far, with Cersei killing all her foes with the unforgiving Wildfire. Sadly, even Margaery would have been killed (apparently), since the explosion was huge!
- Sadly though, Tommen jumps to his death from his castle’s tower on witnessing the explosion at the Sept of Baelor, and in turn, Cersei crowns herself as the ruler of the Seven Kingdoms.

- Cersei has once again proved what a vixen she is. She has managed to kill every single enemy of hers (in the Kings Landing). Now, all the people are afraid of her. Even Jaime begins to dislike Cersei and the anger can be witnessed in his eyes (from the trailer).
- Euron will meet a very satisfying end. It will probably be brought by Daenerys. Also, Daenerys will begin her onslaught of Westeros from Dragonstone.
- The Hound will be facing The Mountain and there is a possibility that Sandor will kill is evil brother this time. (He was brought back from the dead for a reason, right?)
- From the latest promo titled The Long Walk, it is quite clear that the White Walkers will give the main characters a hard time. When the trailer ends, we see a blue eye which possibly belongs to zombified Wun Wun or the Night King. This is an implication that the White Walkers are observing everything and will come as a nightmare for Cersei, Jon and Daenerys.
